Vitamins during pregnancy: folic acid is particularly important
In addition to a healthy and balanced diet, it is particularly important during pregnancy that a good supply of vitamins and minerals is guaranteed. The intake of folic acid is particularly necessary because it can prevent neural tube defects (malformations in the baby’s nervous system), which can be associated with very serious health problems or the death of the child.
Since the need for folic acid doubles at the beginning of pregnancy, particular attention should be paid to an adequate supply of the vitamin during this time. Folic acid is mainly found in green vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, rose and kale as well as in egg yolks, asparagus, tomatoes, wheat germ and whole grain rye.
Types of fruit such as bananas, oranges and mangoes, which contain plenty of folic acid should also be on the menu. In addition, folic acid should also be taken in tablet form. The recommended daily dose is 600 µg (micrograms) = 0.6 mg. It is absolutely recommended to take folic acid from the time of a planned pregnancy, for example after stopping the pill.
Vitamins during pregnancy: taking vitamins B6 and B12
In addition to folic acid, iodine intake is recommended because iodine deficiency increases the risk of miscarriage and malformations. Pregnant women should therefore consume around 100 micrograms of iodine daily. Vitamins B6 and B12 are also important in pregnancy. Vitamin B6 is especially important for the fetus to develop a healthy brain and nervous system.
It should also help against morning sickness during pregnancy. Vitamin B6 is mainly found in bananas, potatoes, walnuts, fish, meat and green vegetables. Vitamin B12 is found in meat, fish and milk. It supports cell structure and blood formation.
Vitamins during pregnancy: Vitamins A and C are valuable
Vitamin A also plays an important role for mother and child during pregnancy. It is found in fish, spinach, and red vegetables and fruits. Vitamin A protects the cells and is also important for eyesight. Vitamin C, which occurs particularly in peppers, Brussels sprouts and tropical fruits, strengthens the immune system and is important for the connective tissue and bones.
Vitamins in pregnancy play an important role in the development of the baby in the womb. A healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables should therefore have top priority. It is also advisable to take vitamins in tablet form before and during pregnancy. Folic acid is particularly important and should be taken before pregnancy.
